Is it safe to let baby drink water?

Giving water to baby less than 6 months of age is not only unnecessary but can even be dangerous. Both breastmilk and formula milk contain more than 80% water so baby receives plenty of water in this form.

Why it is dangerous then? Since water is “empty calories” and with baby’s stomach being so small, filling up with water limits the space available for milk.

There is also a risk of water intoxification. This occurs when too much water is given to a baby and causes an imbalance of the body’s natural salts. This condition can cause fits, brain damage, coma and even death.

Therefore, if you need to give baby some water, limit it to 1-2 ounces and give it only after his milk feed. Remember to make sure it is always cooled down boiled water!!
